Feline hyperthyroidism is a condition that usually affects older cats between the ages of 4 to 22 yrs. This condition is predominantly a condition that affects cats. Dogs that are affected is a rare occurrence. This condition is one in which there is an abnormally large amount of thyroid hormone being produced by the thyroid gland.
The most common signs seen on presentation are:
- Weight loss
- Very large appetite
- Vomiting
- Hyperactivity
- Diarrhea
- Unusual vocalization
- Unkempt hair coat
- Cardiac abnormalities
- Mass in the ventral neck region
- Muscle wasting
The above list is not all-inclusive and some cats exhibit very few signs at all. It is very important to have your cat examined because this condition can lead to more serious health problems.
This condition can easily be diagnosed with a blood test checking for a high circulating level of thyroid hormone. Once the condition is diagnosed, treatment may consist of one or more of the following:
1. Oral antithyroid medication
2. Radioactive Iodine administration
3. Surgical removal of the affected thyroid lobes
This condition is very serious in older pets and because of that, it is important to aggressively treat this condition promptly. By doing so, your cat may be able to still enjoy a very comfortable life.
